سلامٌpeace علىupon قَومٍa people مضَوْاthey departed لسبيلِهِمْon their way
سلامٌ على قَومٍ مضَوْا لسبيلِهِمْ
فلمso not يبقَremain إلاexcept ذكرُهُمْtheir memory وحَديثُهُمْand talk of them
فلم يبقَ إلا ذكرُهُمْ وحَديثُهُمْ
Peace be upon a people who have gone their way.
Peace upon a people who went on their path,
So nothing remains but their memory and talk of them.
Nothing remains but their memory and their story.
لقدْindeed صرَعَتْهُمْstruck them down صَرَعُةthe blow المَوتِof death فاستوىso became equal
لقدْ صرَعَتْهُمْ صَرَعُة المَوتِ فاستوى
قَديُمهُمْtheir earlier ones فيin شأنِهِمْtheir condition وحَديثُهُمْand their later ones
قَديُمهُمْ في شأنِهِمْ وحَديثُهُمْ
Indeed, death’s blow has struck them down, making equal
Surely the blow of death felled them, so
The earlier and the later among them in their fate.
Their elders and their youths are equal in their affair.
