ياO صاعداًone ascending فيin جَوِّthe air of طَيرٍa bird شامِخٍlofty
يا صاعداً في جَوِّ طَيرٍ شامِخٍ
عمّاin قَليلٍa short while أنتَyou أسفلُthe lowest سافِلِof the lowly
عمّا قَليلٍ أنتَ أسفلُ سافِلِ
O you rising in the sky where a lofty bird flies,
O you who ascend in towering skies
Before long, you will be the lowest of the low.
In but a little while, you'll be the lowest of the low
آيَسْتَنيyou made me despair وأرَحْتَنيand relieved me وكَفيْتَنيand spared me
آيَسْتَني وأرَحْتَني وكَفيْتَني
واليَأْسُand despair خَيرٌbetter مِنْthan مَنوعٍone who withholds باخِلِstingy
واليَأْسُ خَيرٌ مِنْ مَنوعٍ باخِلِ
You have made me despair, relieved me, and spared me;
You disappointed me, relieved me, sufficed me
And despair is better than a withholding miser.
And despair is better than a miser's gift
أأرومُdo I seek? فيin أيَامِthe days of عِزِّكَyour power بَسْطَةٌan increase
أأرومُ في أيَامِ عِزِّكَ بَسْطَةٌ
فيin الجاهِrank ليfor me إنِّيindeed I لَعينُsurely the very embodiment of الجاهِلِthe fool
في الجاهِ لي إنِّي لَعينُ الجاهِلِ
Do I seek, in the days of your power, an increase
Shall I seek in your days of glory, largesse?
In rank for myself? Indeed, I am the very embodiment of a fool.
Lo! I am the eye of the ignorant in grandeur
