أباO father of قاسِمٍQasim كمْmany a ظالِمٍoppressor مُتَعَجْرِفٍarrogant
نضاليbared against me حَدَّيْthe two edges of سَيفِهِhis sword وسِنانِهِand his spearhead
O Abu Qasim, many an arrogant oppressor
O Abu Qasim, how many unjust and arrogant oppressors
Has bared against me his sword's edge and his spearhead's point.
My struggle has blunted their swords and teeth.
فسَلَّمَنيso kept me safe اللهُGod الكريمُthe Generous بلُطفِهِthrough His kindness
وصَيَّرَنيand placed me فيin لُطفِهِHis gracious care وضَمانِهِand His protection
So God, the Generous, kept me safe through His kindness,
So Allah the Generous protected me with His kindness,
And placed me in His gracious care and protection.
And sheltered me with His kindness and protection.
ومِنهُمْand among them أبوكَyour father إنَّهُindeed he سَلَّunsheathed مُصْلِتاًbrandishing
عَلَيَّagainst me حُسامَيْthe two sharp swords of كَيدِهِhis guile ولِسانِهِand his tongue
And among them was your father: he drew and brandished
And among them is your father, he indeed handed over
Against me the two keen swords of his guile and his tongue.
his swords and tongue to assail me.
فلّماthen when غَرpersisted فيin ظُلمِهِhis oppression وَعتُوِّهِand his insolence
وأشبَهَand resembled عِيراًan ass لجَّpersisted obstinately فيin نزَوانِهِits leaping
Then, when he persisted in his oppression and insolence
But when he persisted in his injustice and arrogance,
And was like an ass obstinately leaping,
And resembled a camel gone mad in its rage,
صبَرْتُI endured patiently علىin the face of مكروهِهِhis harm فتكشَّفَتْthen unfolded
عواقِبُهُits consequences عنto reveal عِزَّتيmy honor وهَوانِهِand his humiliation
I bore his harm patiently; then there unfolded
I endured his schemes, and so his consequences
Its consequences, revealing my honor and his humiliation.
were uncovered, my honor and his disgrace.
فإنْso if تتّقيهِyou guard against him أوْor صبْرتyou endure patiently فإنَّماthen it is only that
زمانُكَyour time أيضاَtoo مُنقَضٍcoming to an end كزَمانِهِlike his time
So whether you guard against him or patiently endure, after all,
So if you fear Him or have patience, then surely
Your time, too, is coming to an end, like his.
your time will also pass like his time.
