O Abu al-Abbas, do not think that I,
Abu al-Abbas, do not think that I
because of my age, am bare of poetry's adornments.
Am bare of the jewelry of poetry because of my age

For I have a poetic gift like a sweet, flowing stream,
For I have a nature like a flowing brook
crystal-clear, coursing from the crests of rocks.
With clear water dripping from rocks

If ever time's vicissitudes leave a fire-stick sparkless,
When troubles pile up like firewood
then I have a fire-stick that sparks despite them.
I have a flint against troubles ever ready
