عَن نَجيبٍ قالي البقا مَنهوكِ
Mistress of reproach, desist—may your mouth be shattered—
O blamer, shorten your excess blame
from blaming a noble man who loathes life, worn out.
Of a noble one whose vigor is worn down

Enamored, with love flaring up every hour,
A lover whose passion is lit each hour
cast in obedience to passion.
Molded by desire’s obedience

Do not persist in blaming him, and excuse him.
Do not condemn him, make excuses for him
And seek refuge from his torn veil.
And seek refuge from his tattered veil

في حالة الذَليل الرَكيكِ
For passion leaves the mighty man, possessed of power,
For passion leaves the mighty as prey
in the state of the abject and feeble.
To the state of the despised and weak

I spent two months in passion; and had it
For two months I have been in love, and if
befallen you, you would have seen plainly what grieves you.
It touched you, you'd see nothing could equal it

المأخَذِ صَعبِ المَرفوضِ وَالمَتروكِ
And by my life, passion is indeed easy
By my life, passion is most gentle
to take up, but hard to reject and abandon.
In how it ensnares, rejects, and abandons
