بأبيmay my father be ransom for أخوةٌbrothers ترحَّلْتُI departed عَنهمfrom them
فترحَّلْتُso I departed عنfrom سُرورٍjoy وأُنْسِand companionship
May my father be ransom for the brothers I departed from;
By my father, brothers with whom I journeyed
for I departed from joy and companionship.
And so I journeyed from joy and companionship
فارَقونيthey parted from me فأَرَّقونيso they kept me sleepless فأذكَوْاso they kindled
شُعَلَflames الوَجدِof longing فيin خواطِرِthe thoughts of نَفسيmy soul
They parted from me, kept me sleepless, and kindled
They left me so they saddened me and ignited
the flames of longing in the thoughts of my soul.
The flames of passion in the thoughts of my soul
يقولونَthey say لوif only عاشَرْتَناyou kept our company ووصلْتَناand you maintained ties with us
وهَيْهاتand far from possible أينَwhere القَومُthe people منِّيfrom me ومنand from جِنسيmy kind
They say, 'If only you would keep our company and maintain ties with us.'
They say, “If only you had stayed with us and kept us company”
But that is impossible! How far these people are from me and my kind!
Alas! Where are those people to me or of my kind?
وكيفَand how وِصاليmy joining فرقةًa group فَرْقُthe difference بينِهمbetween them
وبَينيand between me كَفرْقِlike the difference الجِنِّthe jinn منfrom فِرَقِthe groups of الإنسِhumankind
And how can I join a group when the divide between them
How can my company be a kinship when separation
and me is like the divide between the jinn and the groups of humankind?
Lies between them and me like the separation of jinn from mankind
ومنزِلَةُand the place الأنسِof companionship الذيwhich فيهin it أُنسُهمtheir comfort
ويُوحِشُهُand makes it desolate جدِّيmy seriousness وماand there is no فيهِin it منany أُنْسcomfort
And the place of fellowship in which they find comfort—
And the status of companionship in which their companionship lies
my seriousness makes it desolate, and there is no comfort in it.
While my seriousness makes me lonely and lacking their companionship
