Is there among the people a benefactor or a generous giver

    who desires gratitude and remembrance,

who gives a carat of his kindness

and receives a hundredweight of my thanks?

No! Generosity and bounty have vanished,

and people of virtue and standing have died.

And now among the people there is no

noble soul who hastens toward a generous deed.

They have as much money and wealth as you could wish,

    and numbers, plentiful and abundant;

yet, because of the narrowness of their character,

they are in the tightest straits of hardship and poverty.

And wealth, unless a virtuous person possesses it,

is more wasted than a necklace without a neck.
