حين دارت من السرور الكؤوس

Indeed, our brothers who went before us,

Our beloved friends preceded us

when the cups of joy went round,

When cups of joy circulated

شربوا صفوةَ الزمانِ وأبقوا

شربوا صفوةَ الزمانِ وأبقوا

كدراً تقشعرُّ منه النفوسُ

كدراً تقشعرُّ منه النفوسُ

drank time's purest portion and left behind

They drank the essence of time and left

dregs that make souls shudder.

Turbidity that repulses souls

وكذا عادة الزمانِ وكلٌّ

وكذا عادة الزمانِ وكلٌّ

بتصاريفه مسوسٌ مدوسُ

بتصاريفه مسوسٌ مدوسُ

And such is time's custom, and everyone

And so is the habit of time, each

is governed and trampled by its vicissitudes.

Is influenced and trampled by its vicissitudes

فلقومٍ إذا اعتبرتَ سعودٌ

فلقومٍ إذا اعتبرتَ سعودٌ

ولِقومٍ إذا اعتبرت نُحوسُ

ولِقومٍ إذا اعتبرت نُحوسُ

So for some, if you reflect, there is good fortune,

For some people, if you consider, fortune

and for others, if you reflect, ill fortune.

And for others, if you consider, misfortune
