إذا قرأتَ كتابَ اللهِِ فاتَّبع ا
مisolated mīm; no independent meaning لأحكامَfor rulings (garbled in context) فيهِwithin it وسَدِّدْand direct نحوَهُtoward it الفِكَراthe thoughts
م لأحكامَ فيهِ وسَدِّدْ نحوَهُ الفِكَرا
If you read the Book of God, then follow
When you read the book of God then follow
[the] rulings within it, and direct your thoughts toward it.
Its rulings and direct your thoughts towards it
فليسَfor … not يُغنيكَavails you ألفاظٌwords تُكرِّرُهاyou repeat them
فليسَ يُغنيكَ ألفاظٌ تُكرِّرُها
إذاif عَقَلْتَyou understood فلمْbut did not تعمَلْyou act بماupon what أمَراit commanded
إذا عَقَلْتَ فلمْ تعمَلْ بما أمَرا
For words you repeat will not benefit you
Simply repeating words will not avail you
if you understand but do not act on what it commands.
If you understand yet do not act as commanded
وكيفَand how تُغنيavails عنِfor الغَرثانِthe famished man مائدَةٌa laden table
وكيفَ تُغني عنِ الغَرثانِ مائدَةٌ
إذاif أدامَhe maintained إلىtoward باحاتِهاits open expanses النَّظَراthe gaze
إذا أدامَ إلى باحاتِها النَّظَرا
And how can a laden table benefit a famished man
Of what use is a laden table to the destitute
if he keeps his gaze fixed on its expanse?
If he but keeps his gaze upon its gates
