إنْif كنتُI were أختارُI choose السُّلُوَّsolace through forgetting فلاthen do not تُرِحُrelieve
إنْ كنتُ أختارُ السُّلُوَّ فلا تُرِحُ
ياربِّO my Lord قلبيmy heart الدَّهْرَfor all time منfrom أَوصابِهits afflictions
ياربِّ قلبي الدَّهْرَ من أَوصابِه
If I choose solace in forgetting, then do not relieve
If I choose the path of peace do not quench
my heart, O my Lord, of its afflictions, ever.
My Lord, my heart from its times of grief
بالجُودِto show generosity أوصانيhe enjoined me أبيmy father فحفِظُتُهُso I upheld it
بالجُودِ أوصاني أبي فحفِظُتُهُ
أهلاًwelcome وسَهلاًand a warm welcome بالّذيto that which أوصىhe enjoined بِهِconcerning it
أهلاً وسَهلاً بالّذي أوصى بِهِ
My father enjoined generosity upon me, so I upheld it.
With generosity, my father advised me, so I kept it
A warm welcome to what he enjoined.
Welcome, welcome to him who counseled it
