I sought you, riding across the barren deserts.

Yet you did not feed me even plain bread.

Nor did you give water to quench my thirst,

Nor kindle a fire to mark my welcome as a guest.

But today I turn my reproach upon myself,

And I accept no excuse from it.

Why did it seek the house of a man who does not

mark out for himself a dwelling in glory?

So, O my foot, you have stepped into loss,

And you make me drink humiliation and abasement.

And, O my foot, you have inflicted upon me a fracture,

A dreadful one, from which I see no recovery.

So, if others are killed by an oppressor, I

see that my foot has openly shed my blood.
