I see wealth consumed and its freshness worn away

by needs that come each morning or calamities that visit by night.

So the prudent man, in his ways and choices,

makes the market of noble deeds flourish and spends,

and knows that glory is the noblest possession,

and that the breeze of gratitude is sweeter and more fragrant.

So spend your wealth on good deeds, confident

that the One who depleted it will grant wealth and provide.

And leave the ill-tempered, base, headstrong miser

to suffer from the traits of the ignoble, as they have suffered.

For I have seen no tale more wondrous than wealth's,

when a wise, discerning man judges fairly:

it sunders glory's unity if you amass it,

and gathers the scattered parts of greatness when it is scattered.

And they said, 'The path to livelihood on earth is broad.'

So I said, 'Yet the pursuit of livelihood is narrow:

if there is no noble man on earth to help me,

and I have no earnings, then where will my sustenance come from?'
