قلتُ للسّائلينَ لّما رأوْني

قلتُ للسّائلينَ لّما رأوْني

خَطِلَ الخطْوِ في اختلافي إليهِ

خَطِلَ الخطْوِ في اختلافي إليهِ

I said to those who questioned me when they saw me

I saw them wondering, as I walked

Unsteady of step in my repeated visits to him:

Unevenly toward Him in yearning ardor drawn,

ما اختلافي إليه إلا لأمرٍ

ما اختلافي إليه إلا لأمرٍ

وهو في الخَلوةِ اختلافي عَليهِ

وهو في الخَلوةِ اختلافي عَليهِ

I keep visiting him for one purpose alone—

"Why do you go so distractedly?" I talked

And that is to oppose him in private.

To them, "Yea, to aloneness with God I'm drawn."
