أخٌ لي بطيءُ الَّيرِ عَنِّي وفاؤهُ

أخٌ لي بطيءُ الَّيرِ عَنِّي وفاؤهُ

وإن خانَ يوماً أو جَفا الخِلّ أوْ جَفا

وإن خانَ يوماً أو جَفا الخِلّ أوْ جَفا

I have a brother whose loyalty is slow to leave me [assuming the unclear word means 'movement'].

My slow-paced brother has shown me loyalty

And even if one day he betrays or shuns the friend, or turns cold.

Though he betrayed me one day, or kin were cold and aloof

جَفاني لمَّا أنْ تكدَّرَ مَشرَبَي

جَفاني لمَّا أنْ تكدَّرَ مَشرَبَي

عَلَيَّ فلمَّا أنْ صَفا الشربُ أَنصَفا

عَلَيَّ فلمَّا أنْ صَفا الشربُ أَنصَفا

He shunned me when my drink became turbid

They shunned me when my water was muddied

for me; then, when the drink grew clear, he dealt fairly.

Then cleared toward me when the drink turned pure
