كَمْHow many مِنَّةٍa favor مِنهُfrom him عَلىupon عَلِيِّAli
كَمْ مِنَّةٍ مِنهُ عَلى عَلِيِّ
بلاwithout بَلاءٍservice قدalready مضىhas passed مُضِيِّpassing
بلا بَلاءٍ قد مضى مُضِيِّ
How many favors he has bestowed upon Ali,
How many favors from him upon Ali
Without any service already rendered and passed,
Without affliction, already passed favorably
ولاnor ولاءٍloyalty سابِقٍprior مَرْضِيِّpleasing
ولا ولاءٍ سابِقٍ مَرْضِيِّ
إلاّexcept إلىtoward تَهدِيَةِbestowing gifts الهَدِيِّthe gifts
إلاّ إلى تَهدِيَةِ الهَدِيِّ
Nor any prior loyalty found pleasing,
Nor preceding loyalty pleasing
Simply for the bestowal of gifts,
Except to the gift of the guide
فِعلَacting like الأبِthe father الحَفِيِّsolicitous بالصَّبِيِّtoward the boy
فِعلَ الأبِ الحَفِيِّ بالصَّبِيِّ
As a father tenderly caring for his boy would do.
