مُبْدعٌ في شمائلِ المَجدِ حَتْماً

مُبْدعٌ في شمائلِ المَجدِ حَتْماً

ما اهتَدَيْنا لأخْذِه واقتِباسِه

ما اهتَدَيْنا لأخْذِه واقتِباسِه

He is surely an innovator in the qualities of glory;

An excellent poet in virtues of glory assuredly

we have found no way to adopt his example or draw from it.

We were not guided to take and emulate him

فهوَ فَظٌ بالمال حينَ تَراهُ

فهوَ فَظٌ بالمال حينَ تَراهُ

وجَوادٌ بالعَفْوِ في وَقتِ باسِهْ

وجَوادٌ بالعَفْوِ في وَقتِ باسِهْ

For he is harsh with wealth when you see him,

Yet he is vulgar in wealth when you see him

and generous with pardon in the hour of his might.

And generous in pardon at the hour of his heroism
