The jurist—the jurist of Bust—has become a dolt;
The jurist—the jurist of Bust—has become a dull-witted packhorse;
he has reached the utmost bounds of doltishness—or come close.
And has reached the utmost in such dullness—or come close.

He commits offenses, yet owes no blood-money for an offense;
He commits offenses, yet owes no blood-money for an offense;
had he reason, he would pay blood-money whenever he offended.
Had he reason, he would pay blood-money when he offended.
فِراقُparting from هذاthis الشّيخِelder أذكىhas kindled لَناfor us
فِراقُ هذا الشّيخِ أذكى لَنا
فيin القَلبِthe heart أشجاناًsorrows وأشجاناand made us grieve
في القَلبِ أشجاناً وأشجانا
Parting from this sheikh has kindled for us
Parting from this elder has kindled for us
sorrows in the heart—and has grieved us.
Sorrows in the heart, and made us grieve.
ماwhat ضرَّهُharmed him لوif زارَناhe visited us مُنَعِماًbestowing favors
ما ضرَّهُ لو زارَنا مُنَعِماً
بالبِرِّwith kindness أحياناًnow and then فأحياناand thus revived us
بالبِرِّ أحياناً فأحيانا
What harm would it have done him to visit us, bestowing favor,
What harm would it do him to visit us, bestowing
with kindness now and then—and thereby revive us?
Kindness now and then, and so bring us back to life?
