يقولونَthey say كمhow much تشقىyou toil بدَرسٍat study تديُمهُyou pursue it unceasingly
وتمعنُand you delve deeply فيهِinto it دائباًtirelessly كلَّutmost إمعانِthoroughness
They say, “How you toil at the study you pursue unceasingly,
and delve into it tirelessly, to the utmost!”
فقلتُso I said ذرونيleave me be إنّماonly أناI كادِحٌone who strives
لأكملَto perfect ذاتيmyself أوor لأجَبرَto remedy نقصانيmy deficiency
So I said, “Leave me be; I am only striving
to perfect myself or make up for my shortcomings.
إذاif لمnot يكنْbe نقصانُthe dwindling of عمريmy lifespan زيادةٌan increase
لِعلْميin my knowledge فإنِّيthen indeed I والبهيمَةِand the beast سِيَّانِare alike
If the dwindling of my lifespan brings no increase
in my knowledge, then I and the beast are alike.”
