A man's increase in worldly wealth is but a loss,
A man's increase in his worldly life is diminution,
and profit not alloyed with pure goodness is ruin.
And his profit, unless pure goodness, is loss.

It is your pillar when other pillars fail you.

Let no good fortune brought by rashness deceive you;
recklessness destroys, while a person's gentleness builds.
Rashness tears down, while a person's gentleness builds.

And Baqil amid abundant wealth is Sahban.

Indeed, nor is every plant sa‘dan.

kindness is disfigured by delay and procrastination.
Delay and evasion scratch the face of goodness.

O you who strut in luxuriant youth, intoxicated
from its cup—has a drunkard ever attained right guidance?
By its cup—has a drunkard ever attained right guidance?
لاdo not تَغتَرِرْbe beguiled بشَبابٍby youth وارِفٍlush خَضِلٍdewy
فكَمْfor how many تَقدَّمَpassed ahead قَبَbefore الشّيْبِgray hair شُبّانُyoung men
Do not be beguiled by luxuriant, flourishing, dewy youth:
Do not be beguiled by youth, lush and dewy;
how many young men departed before their hair turned gray.
Many young men have passed on before going gray.

O gray-haired man, had you counseled yourself sincerely,
And O brother of gray hair, if you counseled yourself honestly, there would
one like you would not persist in excess.
Be no persistence in excess from one like you.
هبِsuppose الشَّبيبَةَyouth تُبْليwears away عُذرَthe excuse of صاحبهاits possessor
ماwhat عُذْرُexcuse أشَيبَa gray-haired man يَستهويهِentices him شَيْطانُa devil
Grant that youth's decay may excuse its possessor—
Grant that youth wears away its possessor's excuse;
what excuse has a graybeard whom Satan leads astray?
What excuse has a gray-haired man whom a devil entices?
كُلُّall الذُّنوبِsins فإنَّfor indeed اللهGod يغفِرهاforgives them
إنif شَيَّعَaccompanies المَرءَa person إخلاصٌsincerity وإيمانُand faith
Every sin God may forgive,
All sins—God forgives them,
if sincerity and faith accompany the sinner.
If sincerity and faith accompany a person.
وكُلُّand every كَسْرٍbreak فإنَّfor indeed اللهGod يَجبُرُهُmends it
وماbut no لِكَسرِfor the breaking of قَناةِthe shaft of الدِّينِreligion جُبْرانُmending
Every fracture God may mend,
Every break—God mends it,
but a broken pillar of faith admits no mending.
But the breaking of religion's shaft has no mending.
إذاif جَفاكَshuns you خليلٌa close friend كنتَyou used to تألفُهُcherish him
فاطلُبْthen seek سِواهُsomeone other than him فَكُلُّfor all النَّاسِpeople إخوانُbrothers
If a friend you once cherished treats you coldly,
If a close friend you cherished shuns you,
seek another: all people may become brothers.
Seek another, for all people are brothers.
وإنand if نّبَتْprove inhospitable بِكَto you أوطانٌhomelands نَشَأُتَyou grew up بهاin them

If the homelands where you grew up reject you,
If the homelands where you grew up prove inhospitable,
depart—for every land of God may be a homeland.
Depart, for all God's lands are homelands.
والصّداِقُand the truthful man البرُّthe righteous فيin الدُّنياthe world مُسَيْلمَةٌMusaylima

والأحَمَقُand the fool الغُرُّthe gullible فيamid النَّعْماءِprosperity لُقمانُLuqman
Truth and righteousness in this world are deemed Musaylima;
The truthful, righteous man is a Musaylima in this world,
while a foolish naïf amid prosperity is deemed Luqman.
While the gullible fool amid prosperity is a Luqman.
فأكْيَسُso the shrewdest of النّاسِpeople مَنْone who فيin كيسِهِhis purse كِسَرٌscraps
لاnot مَنْone who يُمَدُّis extended لهfor him فيin الفَضلِexcellence مَيْدانُan arena
The shrewdest man is he whose purse contains even a small coin,
The shrewdest person is he whose purse holds scraps,
not merely one for whom a vast field of virtue is laid out.
Not he for whom a field of excellence lies open.
النّاسُpeople هَضْبُthe rocky heights of شِمامٍShimam حَيْثُwhere مَيْسَرَةٌprosperity

People are lofty Mount Shamām wherever ease prevails,
People are Shimam's rocky heights where there is prosperity,
but wherever wealth inclines, they become rancorous.
Yet where wealth inclines, they are [unclear; perhaps 'branches'].
كُنّاwe used to نرىthink إنّماonly الإحسانُbeneficence مَكْرُمَةٌa noble deed

We once believed that beneficence itself was an honor;
We used to think that beneficence alone was nobility;
today, whoever merely does not harm people is called benevolent.
Today, whoever does not harm people is a great benefactor.

Take these circulating, polished proverbs:
Take these polished proverbs, traveling far;
within them is clarification for whoever seeks clarity.
In them is clarity for whoever seeks clarification.

What could diminish their beauty, when natural genius and poetic craft fashioned them—
Their beauties suffer no harm—natural talent is their goldsmith—
if Ḥassān, the champion of poetry, should utter them?
If Hassan, poetry's champion, recites them.
