A visitor came unexpectedly to me while all humankind slept,
one of the birds, and with its beak it gave me

a letter from a far-dwelling beloved, the fairest of all who
walk the earth, nomad and settled dweller alike.
وفيهِand in it إنْif كنتَyou are لاnot تهوىdesire مُواصلتيunion with me

فاقرَ الكتابَ فدَتْك النَّفسُ من قاري
And in it: “If you do not desire union with me,
then read the letter—may my soul ransom you, reader.

You have left me in a land with no companion,
as though your heart were made of rock and pitch.”
