الناسُ إما جائِرٌ شَرِسٌ

الناسُ إما جائِرٌ شَرِسٌ

وثِقافُهُ التقويمُ والعَذلُ

وثِقافُهُ التقويمُ والعَذلُ

People are either fierce wrongdoers,

People are either tyrannical and vicious,

And correction and rebuke are their straightening rod;

And their recompense is discipline and justice,

أو مؤثِرٌ للرُشدِ معتدِلٌ

أو مؤثِرٌ للرُشدِ معتدِلٌ

وجزاؤهُ الإحسانُ والفَضلُ

وجزاؤهُ الإحسانُ والفَضلُ

Or upright people who favor right guidance,

Or moderate, inclined toward righteousness,

And their reward is kindness and generosity.

And their reward is benevolence and grace.

فاقسم لكلِّ ما يليقُ به

فاقسم لكلِّ ما يليقُ به

أو لا فإنّ المُلكَ يختلُّ

أو لا فإنّ المُلكَ يختلُّ

So allot to each what befits him,

So allot to each that which befits them,

Or else the kingdom will fall into disorder.

Lest authority be disrupted.
