إنْif كنْتَyou are تطلُبُseeking رتبةَthe rank of الأشرافِthe noble
إنْ كنْتَ تطلُبُ رتبةَ الأشرافِ
فعليكَthen you must adhere بالإحسانِto kindness والإنصافِand fairness
فعليكَ بالإحسانِ والإنصافِ
If you seek the rank of the noble,
If you seek rank and nobility
then hold fast to kindness and fairness.
Be just, beneficent, full of charity
وإذاand if اعتدىtransgresses خِلٌّa close friend عليكَagainst you فخَلَّهِthen leave him
وإذا اعتدى خِلٌّ عليكَ فخَلَّهِ
والدَّهرَand Time فهْوَfor it لهُfor him مُكافٍa requiter كافِsufficient
والدَّهرَ فهْوَ لهُ مُكافٍ كافِ
And if a friend wrongs you, leave him
If one who has been intimate becomes unkind
to Time, for it is sufficient to requite him.
Leave him to time which renders all unkind
