تقنَّعْBe content بالكفِايةِwith enough فهْيَfor it أوليis more fitting
تقنَّعْ بالكفِايةِ فهْيَ أولي
بوَجهِfor the face الحُرِّof the free man منthan ذُلِّthe humiliation القُنوعِof begging
بوَجهِ الحُرِّ من ذُلِّ القُنوعِ
Be content with enough, for it better befits
a free man's face than the humiliation of begging.
وضنَّand be sparing بِماءwith the water وَجهِكَof your face لاdo not تُرِقْهُspill it
وضنَّ بِماء وَجهِكَ لا تُرِقْهُ
ولاand do not تبذُلْهgive it away للنُّذلِto the wretch المَنوعِthe miserly one
ولا تبذُلْه للنُّذلِ المَنوعِ
And guard the water of your face; do not spill it,
nor offer it to a miserly wretch.
فأهوَنُfor easier منthan سُؤالِthe asking الحُرِّof the free man نَذلاًa wretch
فأهوَنُ من سُؤالِ الحُرِّ نَذلاً
مَماتُthe death الحُرِّof the free man منfrom جُوعٍhunger ونُوعِand hunger's pangs
مَماتُ الحُرِّ من جُوعٍ ونُوعِ
For easier than a free man's asking a wretch
is a free man's death from hunger and its pangs.
