وفي حجرِها مِنِّي ومنْ ناقتي طفلُ
The earth's springs were a nursing mother's breast,
And in her lap, my she-camel and I were one child.

Plunging with us to low ground and rising with us to high ground.

My mouth is like a bow, my tongue its hand;
My praise is its drawing, and my hope its arrows.

My inkwell is like an Abyssinian woman with a child;
My fingertips are her husband, and my soul her offspring.

My hand on the parchment is like a diver in a deep sea;
Through it, my words are pearls by which my worth rises.

To God; neither wealth nor family can console him.

With two fountains of tears—a great bucket and a brimming one.

Whether hardship has straitened him, or a hand has been generous to him,
Whether a failing has delayed him, or merit has advanced him.

They say: he has reached the court of the king who
Has the hoped-for protection and abundant bounty.

He adjures them by God to speak the truth:
Is what you say to me earnest, or is it jest?

As though our father had deposited with the king whom
We sought, a treasure whose return admitted no delay.

May he among the sons of your age be your ransom
Whose speech is not knowledge and whose deeds are not justice.

O king whose least virtue is loftiness,
And whose simplest qualities are generosity and giving.

Save that he is the lion; yet he is the downpour.

Beautiful qualities that sight reveals, just as we see them;
Yet if we recount them, reason rejects them.

Then say, both of you, if he brands noble deeds with his name:
May it gladden you that no noble deed remains unmarked.

And the broken ranks of kings raced you toward the heights;
And truly, you have outstripped them; preeminence is yours.
