تنازَعَdisputed النّاسُthe people فيabout الصُّوفيِّthe Sufi واختلَفواand disagreed
تنازَعَ النّاسُ في الصُّوفيِّ واختلَفوا
قِدْماًlong ago وظَنُّوهُand they thought it مُشتَقاًderived مِنَfrom الصُّوفِwool
قِدْماً وظَنُّوهُ مُشتَقاً مِنَ الصُّوفِ
People disputed over the Sufi and disagreed,
long ago, thinking the name derived from wool.
ولستُand I do not أمنحُgrant هذاthis الاسمَname غيرَother than فتىًa young man
ولستُ أمنحُ هذا الاسمَ غيرَ فتىً
صافيshowed sincerity فصوفِيَand so was met with sincerity حتَّىuntil لُقَّبَwas given the title الصُّوفيthe Sufi
صافي فصوفِيَ حتَّى لُقَّبَ الصُّوفي
And I grant this name to none but a young man
who showed sincerity and was met with sincerity, until he was called the Sufi.
