تَجنَّبْavoid مجالِسَgatherings أهلِpeople of الفَسادِcorruption
تَجنَّبْ مجالِسَ أهلِ الفَسادِ
وقايِضْand exchange دُنُوَّكَyour closeness مِنْهُمto them ببُعْدِfor distance
وقايِضْ دُنُوَّكَ مِنْهُم ببُعْدِ
Avoid the gatherings of corrupt people,
Avoid the gatherings of the corrupt people
And exchange your closeness to them for distance.
And distance yourself far away from them
فقدْfor … may يُفسِدُcorrupt المْرءَa person بعدَafter الصَّلاحِuprightness
فقدْ يُفسِدُ المْرءَ بعدَ الصَّلاحِ
فَسادُcorruption of الأماكِنِplaces والشَّرُّand evil يُعدِيis contagious
فَسادُ الأماكِنِ والشَّرُّ يُعدِي
For a person, once upright, may be corrupted
For a righteous man may be led astray
By the corruption of places—and evil is contagious.
By the corruption of places, and evil spreads
كَمَاjust as السَّعدُthe auspicious planet يَقْبلُtakes on طَبعَthe nature of النُّحوسill-omened planets
كَمَا السَّعدُ يَقْبلُ طَبعَ النُّحوس
إذاwhen كانَit is فيin مَوضِعٍa place غَيرِnot سَعْدِauspicious
إذا كانَ في مَوضِعٍ غَيرِ سَعْدِ
Just as an auspicious planet takes on the nature of ill-omened planets
Just as luck turns ill-fated
When it is in an inauspicious place.
When not in its rightful place
