وباشرْتand you attended to أمريmy affairs واعتنَيْتَand you cared بحاجَتيfor my need
وباشرْت أمري واعتنَيْتَ بحاجَتي
وأخَّتَand you held back (apparently أَخَّرْتَ) لا“no” عَنِّيfrom me وقَدَّمْتand you put forward ليfor me نَعَمْ“yes”
وأخَّتَ لا عَنِّي وقَدَّمْت لي نَعَمْ
And you attended to my affairs and cared for my need.
You took care of my affair and tended to my need,
And you held “no” back from me and offered me “yes.”
You were gentle with me and granted me boons,
فإنْso if نحنُwe كافَأْناrepay you فأهَلٌthen you are worthy لشُكرِناof our thanks
فإنْ نحنُ كافَأْنا فأهَلٌ لشُكرِنا
وإنْand if نحنُwe قَصَّرْناfall short فماthen not الوُدُّthe affection مُتَّهَمْin doubt
وإنْ نحنُ قَصَّرْنا فما الوُدُّ مُتَّهَمْ
So if we repay you, you are worthy of our thanks.
If we have reciprocated then we deserve thanks,
And if we fall short, our affection is not in doubt.
If we fell short then affection is not to blame.
