ولّماand when خابَfailed حُسنُgoodness of الظَّنِّthe opinion فيكُمْof you (plural)
ورُحْتُand I went away بِذاكَwith that صُفْرempty الرّاحَتَيْنboth palms
And when my good opinion of you proved misplaced,
and I came away from that with both palms empty,
أنِستُI felt at ease كماjust as بِئسْتُI was wretched حُرّاًas a free man
وبَأْسُand the hardship of الحُرُّthe free man إحدىone of الرّاحَتَيْنِthe two comforts
as a free man, I felt at ease just as I had felt wretched;
and a free man's hardship is one of the two comforts.
