وقائلَةٍ إنَّ المعَالي مناهبٌ

وقائلَةٍ إنَّ المعَالي مناهبٌ

فقلتُ لَها أخطأتِ هنَّ مذاهِبُ

فقلتُ لَها أخطأتِ هنَّ مذاهِبُ

And a woman said, “Lofty honors are spoils.”

And she said, “High ideals are delusions,”

So I told her, “You are mistaken; they are paths.”

So I said to her, “There you have gone astray;

أرادَتْ صُدوفي وانحِرافي عنِ العُلا

أرادَتْ صُدوفي وانحِرافي عنِ العُلا

وما أنا في هَذي المذَاهِبِ ذاهِبُ

وما أنا في هَذي المذَاهِبِ ذاهِبُ

She wished me to turn away and veer from lofty heights;

She meant my aloofness and turning from the sublime,

But I will not go down these paths.

Yet in those directions I do not stray.
