يَحُلُّoccupies مَحلَّthe place of العَينِthe eye مِنِّيfor me والسَّمعِand hearing
A brother of mine, pure in soul, lineage, and nature,
A brother of mine, noble of soul, origin, and nature
Who holds the place of my eye and hearing.
Who takes the place of my eyes and hearing
تَمسَّكْتُI held fast مِنهُin him إذْwhen بلوْتُI tested إخاءَهُhis brotherly love
علىthrough حالَتَيْthe two conditions of خَفضِlowering النَّوائبِlife's vicissitudes والرَّفعِand raising
I held fast to him when I had tested his brotherly love,
I clung to him when I tested his brotherhood
Through both the lows and highs of life's vicissitudes:
In my low and high states of vicissitudes and comfort
بأوعظَto a better counselor مِنthan عَقلٍreason وآنسَand more comforting مِنthan هَوىًdesire
وأرفقَand gentler مِنthan طَبعٍnature وأنفعَand more beneficial مِنthan شَرعِreligious law
A better counselor than reason, more comforting than desire,
With more edifying counsel than reason
And gentler than nature, more beneficial than religious law.
More intimate than passion, more gentle than nature, more beneficial than law
