ففي هَذا وذا حِصْنٌ وحُسْنُ
Your portion comes from either a fool or a jurist:
Take your share of a fool or a learned man,
between the two lie a fortress and a grace.
For in this one and that lie a fortress and beauty.
فإنْfor if سالمتَyou make peace فالفُقهاءُthen the learned men حُسْنٌbeauty
فإنْ سالمتَ فالفُقهاءُ حُسْنٌ
وإنْand if حارَبْتَyou wage war فالسُّفَهاءُthen the fools حِصْنُa fortress
وإنْ حارَبْتَ فالسُّفَهاءُ حِصْنُ
If you make peace, the jurists are a grace;
For if you make peace, the learned are an adornment;
and if you wage war, fools are a fortress.
And if you wage war, fools are a fortress.

No one fully meets the demands of earnest resolve except
And none fully meets the requirements of earnestness except
a youth whose character is both gentle and rugged.
A young man whose character holds both smooth ground and rugged terrain.
