وللَمرءٍ أضدادٌ يرومون قسرَهُ

وللَمرءٍ أضدادٌ يرومون قسرَهُ

وليسَ له منهم على حالةٍ بُدُّ

وليسَ له منهم على حالةٍ بُدُّ

And a man has adversaries who seek to subdue him;

A man has foes who seek to do him ill,

and he has no escape from them in any circumstance.

And yet no help for him on earth they will.

فإنْ كانَ ذا خيرٍ جفاه شِرارُهُمْ

فإنْ كانَ ذا خيرٍ جفاه شِرارُهُمْ

وإن كانَ شرّاً فالخِيارُ لهُ ضِدُّ

وإن كانَ شرّاً فالخِيارُ لهُ ضِدُّ

So if he is virtuous, the wicked among them shun him;

If he does good, his evil foes him shun,

and if he is evil, the virtuous are his foes.

And if he's bad, his goodness is his sun.
