ترحَّلْتُI departed عنكَfrom you لفَرطbecause of excessive الشَّقاءِmisery
وحلَّفتُand I made swear رُشديmy sound judgment ورائيbehind me ورائيbehind me
I departed from you out of overwhelming misery.
I departed from you out of excessive misfortune
And I made my good sense swear—behind me, behind me.
And swore my sanity away, away behind me
إلىtoward مَطمَعan object of hope فيكَin you حتّىuntil أراكَI see you
فيُروىso it is quenched صَدايَmy thirst بذاكَwith that الرُّواءِrefreshing draught
Toward a hope in you, until I see you,
To a hope in you until I see you
So my thirst is quenched with that refreshing draught.
So my bosom is watered by that watering
وأصبحْتُand I have become فيin شغُلٍan occupation شاغلٍall-consuming
قليلَlittle الغناءِbenefit كثيرَmuch العناءِhardship
And I am now in an all-consuming occupation,
And I became busy with an occupying busyness
With little benefit and much hardship.
Little singing, abundant misery
فهلْthen, would لكَyou be willing فيto العَفوِpardon عمَّfor what اقترفتُI committed
وفيand in أَعِزَّI may gain honor بذاكَin that الفِناءِthe courtyard
Would you pardon what I have committed,
So is there for you in pardon for what I committed
And let me gain honor in that courtyard?
And in restoring with that loss
أقولُI speak مثالةَin the likeness of مُستغفِرٍone seeking forgiveness
منَfor الذَّنبsin معترفٍconfessing بالجفاءِto estrangement
I speak in the likeness of one seeking forgiveness
I say, an apologizer seeking forgiveness
For sin, confessing to estrangement:
For the sin, admitting to estrangement
فَنائيmy death قريبٌnear إذاif غبِتُI am absent عنكَfrom you
وإمَّاand if رجعتُI return فناءٍextinction فنائيmy extinction
My death is near if I am absent from you;
So my loss is near if I become absent from you
And if I return, it is the death of my death.
Or else I return, my loss is my loss
