ياO مَنْyou whom عقدْتُI bound بهِto him الرَّجاءَhope فلمyet not يكُنْbe
يا مَنْ عقدْتُ بهِ الرَّجاءَ فلم يكُنْ
ليfor me مِنهُfrom him إرفادٌaid ولاnor إيناسُcomfort
لي مِنهُ إرفادٌ ولا إيناسُ
O you on whom I pinned my hope, yet there was
O you, in whom I placed my hopes, yet found
Neither aid nor comfort for me from you.
No comfort from you, nor any consolation,
إنْif كانَwas قدalready جرَحَwounded المطامِعَaspirations عِفَّتيmy self-restraint
إنْ كانَ قد جرَحَ المطامِعَ عِفَّتي
فوراءَthen beyond ذاكَthat الجُرحِwound جُرحٌa wound ياسُوheals
فوراءَ ذاكَ الجُرحِ جُرحٌ ياسُو
If my self-restraint has wounded my aspirations,
If my modest hopes have suffered injury
Then beyond that wound lies a wound that heals.
From you, beyond that wound lies deeper sorrow.
