قلْتُI said لّماwhen غدوْتَyou became صَدْراًa dignitary وأضحىand became
زُمَرُthrongs النّاسِthe people وافِدينَcoming as visitors عَلَيكَto you
I said, when you became a dignitary and there were
I said, when you rose high and throngs of people
throngs of people coming to you:
Came to visit you, may God not tend to him who tended you,
لاnot رعىcare for اللهُGod مَنْwhoever رعاكَcared for you وأعلىand raised
فَوقَabove أيديthe hands of بنيthe sons of المَعاليeminence يَدَيْكَyour two hands
May God not care for whoever cared for you and raised
And raised your hands above the hands of the eminent.
your two hands above the hands of the sons of eminence.
For he who drew honor from you has been abased,
فلقدْfor indeed ذَلَّwas humbled مَنْwhoever أفادَكَgranted you عِزّاًhonor
ولقدand indeed زَلَّstumbled منwhoever أزَلَّbestowed favors إليْكَupon you
For he who granted you honor has indeed been humbled,
And he who turned to you in need has slipped.
and he who bestowed favors upon you has indeed stumbled.
