يسوءُكَ دَهرٌ ثم يُؤِنسُ غِبُّهُ

Be patient when hardship befalls you, for sometimes

Be patient when hardship befalls you, for perhaps

time grieves you, then its aftermath brings you comfort.

A time that has been cruel will afterwards comfort its absence.

وأجرُ الفَتى فيما يَمُضُّ فؤادَهْ

وأجرُ الفَتى فيما يَمُضُّ فؤادَهْ

ولا أجرَ فيما يَشتهي ويُحِبُّهُ

ولا أجرَ فيما يَشتهي ويُحِبُّهُ

And a young man's reward lies in what pains his heart,

The merit of a man is in what eases his heart,

and there is no reward in what he desires and loves.

Not in what he desires and loves.
