نصحتُكَ جامِلِ الإخوانَ طُرّاً

نصحتُكَ جامِلِ الإخوانَ طُرّاً

على عَذْبٍ سَقَوْهُ أو أُجاجِ

على عَذْبٍ سَقَوْهُ أو أُجاجِ

I advise you: be gracious to all your brethren,

I advised you, O beautiful one of companions,

whether they have served sweet water or brine.

Gently, on sweet water or bitter they drank,

ولا تَرجُ الصَّفاءَ بِغَيرِ مَذْقٍ

ولا تَرجُ الصَّفاءَ بِغَيرِ مَذْقٍ

فلا يخلو السِّراجُ مِنَ السِّناجِ

فلا يخلو السِّراجُ مِنَ السِّناجِ

And do not hope for purity without admixture,

Do not expect sincerity without discernment,

for no lamp is free of soot.

For the lamp is not without the wick.
