A day that surpasses other days:

The clouds mingled its light with darkness.

And the lightning throbs like a bewildered heart,

And the clouds weep like a lovesick eye.

And the earth's face is like a lovesick lover's cheek,

Whose streams of tears were joined to further streams.

So seek four things for your day—they are what one longs for,

And through them the pleasure of days grows pure:

The beloved's face, and a cheerful sight,

And a melodious singer, and a cup of wine.

When a ruling power prevails, submit,

And do not refuse to yield to it; you will be safe.

For striving to overpower those who are stronger

Is a road that leads to utter destruction.
