مضىpassed away المُزَنيُّal-Muzani الّذيwho لمdid not يَزلْcease to be
لَناfor us مزنَةًa raincloud مالَهاit has no منany (emphatic) خُمودِfading
Al-Muzani has passed away, he who was always
The generous man who never ceased
a raincloud for us that never faded.
To be bountiful and free from languor is gone,
مضىpassed away والتُقّىand piety مَعهُwith him والعُلاand eminence
فماso there is no لِلعُلىfor eminence بعدَهاafter it منany (emphatic) وُجودِexistence
He has passed away, and with him piety and eminence;
Gone, with piety his mate, and loftiness of mind,
so eminence has no existence after its passing.
So that sublimity can claim no place without him.
أقولُI say لأعدائهِto his enemies الشّامتيthe gloating ones (continued)
نَcompletion of “the gloating ones” أبُشِّرْتُمُwere you given glad tidings? بعدَهُafter him بالخُلودِof immortality
I say to his gloating enemies:
To his enemies, exulting in his loss, I say:
“Have you been promised immortality after him?”
"Rejoice not! Immortality is now your doom."
