ياO سالبَstealer of القَلبِthe heart مِنّيfrom me عِندَماwhen رَمَقاcast a glance
لَمdid not يُبقِleave حُبُّكَlove for you لِيfor me صَبراًpatience وَلاnor رَمَقاa breath of life
O you who stole my heart from me when you cast a glance,
O you who have taken my heart when it was on its last breath,
O you who snatched my heart the moment you glanced,
Love for you has left me neither patience nor a breath of life.
Your love has left me no patience or life in me.
Your love has left me neither patience nor a spark of life.
لاdo not تَسألِask اليَومَtoday عَمّاabout what كابدتendured كَبديmy liver
لَيتَif only الفِراقَparting وَلَيتَand if only الحُبَّlove ماnot خُلِقاwere both created
Do not ask today what my liver has endured.
Ask me not today what my liver has endured,
Do not ask today what my heart has endured;
If only parting and love had never been created.
If only parting and love were never created.
Would that separation—and would that love—had never been created.
ماnot باِختياريَby my choice ذُقتُI tasted الحبَّlove ثانيةًa second time
وَإِنّماbut rather جارَتِdealt unjustly الأَقدارُthe fates فاتّفَقاand so it happened
It was not by my choice that I tasted love a second time.
It was not by my choice that I tasted love again,
Not by my choice did I taste love a second time,
Rather, the fates dealt unjustly, and so it came to pass.
But destiny overtook and coincided.
But the fates were unjust, and so it came to pass.
وَكنتُand I was فيin كَلَفيmy infatuation الداعيthe one calling إِلىto تَلَفيmy ruin
مِثلَlike الفراشِthe moth أَحَبَّloved النارَthe fire فَاِحتَرَقاand so burned
And in my infatuation, I was the one inviting my own ruin,
And I was, in my misery calling for my ruin,
In my passion, which summoned my ruin, I was
Like a moth that loved the fire and burned.
Like a moth who loved fire and got burned.
Like the moth that loved the flame and burned.
ياO مَنyou who تَجَلّىbecame manifest إِلىto سرّيmy innermost self فَصيّرنيand so made me
دَكّاًcrushed to rubble وَهزَّand shook فُؤاديmy heart عِندَماwhen صعقاfell senseless
O you who revealed yourself to my innermost self and reduced me
O you who has appeared to my secret and made me
O you who manifested to my secret soul, turning me
To rubble, and shook my heart when it fell senseless.
Broken and shook my heart when it was shocked.
To scattered dust, and shaking my heart when it was thunderstruck,
اِنظُرlook إِليَّat me فَإِنَّfor indeed النَفسthe soul قَدalready تَلِفتperished
وَارفُقand be gentle عَليَّwith me فإنَّfor indeed الرُوحَthe spirit قَدalready زهِقاdeparted
Look at me, for my soul has perished.
Look at me, for the self has become worn down,
Gaze upon me, for my soul has perished,
And be gentle with me, for my spirit has departed.
And be gentle with me, for the soul has perished.
And be gentle with me, for my spirit has fled.
