أطال ليلى الكمد

فالدهر ليل سرمد

Sorrow has lengthened my night,

For time has become an endless night.

وما أظن أنه

لليلة الهجر غد

And I do not think that

The night of abandonment has a tomorrow.

يا نائما عن لوعتي

عوفيت مما أجد

O you who sleep, oblivious to my burning anguish,

May you be spared from what I endure.

أرقد هنيئا إنني

لا استطيع أرقد

Sleep blissfully, for I

Am unable to sleep.

جوانح لا تنطفي

وأدمع تطرد

Flames within the ribs that are never extinguished,

And tears that flow incessantly,

وكبد في كبد

لهفي واين الكبد

And a heart in the grip of suffering—

Alas! Is there any heart left?

ولا تسل عن جلدي

واللّه ما لي جلد

And do not ask about my endurance,

By God, I have no endurance.
