Ali wished to recite a poem
In praise of the Commander of the Faithful—so he called to prayer.
فَقُلْتُso I said لَهُto him لاdo not تَعْجَلَنْhasten بِإقامَةٍwith the call to begin prayer
فَقُلْتُ لَهُ لا تَعْجَلَنْ بِإقامَةٍ
فَلَسْتُfor I am not عَلىin a state of طُهْرٍritual purity فَقَالَso he said وَلاnor أَناI
فَلَسْتُ عَلى طُهْرٍ فَقَالَ وَلا أَنا
I said to him, “Do not hasten to give the call to begin prayer,
For I am not ritually pure.” He said, “Nor am I.”
