You will face the graves alone.

And those who weep will laugh after you are gone.

And decay will renew itself in you.

And the days will wear away the memory of you.

And those who draw close to you will wish

    you far away after death.

God bless you—how earnest you are

in your games, how earnest you are!

Death is that which cannot be escaped,

however hard you strive to guard against it.

So decay will surely rush upon you,

and death will surely make straight for you.

And it will surely destroy you by the same thing

with which it destroyed your father and grandfather.

If you were to leave the houses

and their comfort, and settle in your grave,

you would benefit only from a deed

of righteousness, if you had one.

And when the hands are shaken free of dust

from burying you, you are left alone.

And it is as though what you amassed has already become

shares among them—your toil as well.

They take pleasure in what you gathered

for them, and do not feel your loss.
