غَنيتَyou have no need عَنِof الوِدِّthe affection القَديمِold غَنيتاyou have no need
وَضَيَّعتَand you neglected عَهداًa pledge كانَwas ليmine وَنَسيتاand you forgot
You have no need of the old friendship—no need at all.
You have become independent of the old affection
And you neglected a pledge that was mine, and forgot it.
And wasted a covenant that was for me, now forgotten
تَجاهَلتَyou feigned ignorance عَمّاof what كُنتَyou used to تُحسِنُyou excel at وَصفَهُdescribing it
وَمُتَّand you died عَنِto الإِحسانِkindness حينَwhen حَيِيتاyou came to life
You feigned ignorance of what you used to describe so well.
You disregarded what you once were good at describing
And you died to kindness when you came to life.
And died to kindness when you came to life
وَقَدand indeed كُنتَyou were بيtoward me أَيامَdays of ضَعفٍweakness مِنَin القِوىstrength
أَبَرَّkinder وَأَوفىand more faithful مِنكَthan you حينَwhen قَويتاyou grew strong
And indeed, in days of little strength, you treated me
You were, in my days of weakness,
more kindly and faithfully than when you grew strong.
More dutiful and faithful than when you grew strong
عَهِدتُكَI knew you فيin غَيرِother than الوِلايَةِoffice حافِظاًkeeping faith
فَأَغلَقتَthen you shut بابَthe door of الوِدِّthe affection حينَwhen وَليتاyou took office
I knew you to keep faith when you held no office;
I entrusted you, though not in authority, to be a keeper
then you shut the door of friendship when you took office.
Yet you closed the door of affection when you rose to power
وَمِنand among عَجَبِthe wonders of الأَيّامِthe days أَنthat بادَperished مَنthe one who يَفيkeeps faith
وَمَنand the one who كُنتَyou used to تَرعانيyou care for me لَهُfor his sake وَبَقيتاand you survived
And among time's wonders is that he who keeps faith has perished,
And of the wonders of days is that he who was faithful is gone
as has the one for whose sake you used to care for me, while you have survived.
While you, whom I hoped to rely on, remained
غِناكَyour wealth لِمَنfor whoever يَرجوكَhopes in you فَقرٌpoverty وَفاقَةٌand want
وَذُلٌّand humiliation وَيَأسٌand despair مِنكَof you يَومَon the day رُجيتاhope was placed in you
Your wealth, to whoever hopes in you, is poverty and want,
Suffice you for him who hopes in you, poverty, neediness
and humiliation and despair of you on the day hopes were placed in you.
Lowliness and despair in you the day you were hoped in
