رَضيتَyou accepted لِنَفسِكَfor your soul سَوءاتِهاits shameful deeds
وَلَمand did not تَألُyou spare effort حُبّاًout of love لِمَرضاتِهاfor its gratification
You have accepted your soul's shameful deeds,
You have accepted for yourself her wrongs,
And spared no effort, out of love, to please it.
And have not wearied of loving her flaws.
وَحَسَّنتَand you made seem good أَقبَحَthe ugliest أَعمالِهاof its deeds
وَصَغَّرتَand you minimized أَكبَرَthe gravest زَلّاتِهاof its lapses
And made its ugliest deeds seem good,
You have made beautiful her ugliest deeds,
And made light of its gravest lapses.
And made small her greatest mistakes.
وَكَمand how many مِنof سَبيلِa path لِأَهلِfor the people of الصِباyouth
سَلَكتَyou traveled بِهِمwith them فيin بُنَيّاتِهاits byways
And how many a path for the young
How many paths of youthful folly,
Have you walked with them along its byways!
Have you led them down with her fabrications.
وَأَيُّand which الدَواعيof the promptings دَواعيthe promptings of الهَوىdesire
تَطَلَّعتَyou looked عَنهاaway from them لِآفاتِهاbecause of their harms
And which promptings—the promptings of desire—
And which temptations, temptations of passion,
Have you looked away from because of their dangers?
Have you overlooked for her harm.
وَأَيُّand which المَحارِمِsacred prohibitions لَمdid not تَنتَهِكyou violate

وَأَيُّand which الفَضائِحِdisgraceful deeds لَمdid not تاتِهاyou commit them
And which sacred prohibitions have you not violated?
And which taboos have you not violated,
And which disgraceful deeds have you not committed?
And which disgraces have you not visited upon her.
كَأَنّيas though I بِنَفسِكَbeholding your soul قَدalready عوجِلَتwas suddenly overtaken
عَلىin ذاكَthat state فيin بَعضِone of غِرّاتِهاits heedless moments
I seem to see your soul already seized without warning,
As if, verily, you hastened with your soul
In that state, in one of its heedless moments,
To that, in one of her delusions.
وَقامَتand rose نَوادِبُهاits mourning women حُسَّراًbareheaded
تَداعىcalling one another بِرَنَّةِwith the wail of أَصواتِهاtheir voices
And its mourning women have risen bareheaded,
And her wailers stood up mourning,
Calling to one another with the wail of their voices.
Collapsing with the clamor of their voices.
أَلَمdo ... not? تَرَyou see أَنَّthat دَبيبَthe creeping of اللَياليthe nights
يُسارِقُfurtively robs نَفسَكَyour soul ساعاتِهاof its hours
Do you not see that the creeping of the nights
Do you not see that the creeping of nights
Furtively robs your soul of its hours?
Steals your soul in its hours.
وَهَذيand this القِيامَةُthe Resurrection قَدalready أَشرَفَتhas loomed
عَلىover العالَمينَall the worlds لِميقاتِهاfor its appointed time
And this Resurrection is already looming
And this resurrection has verily drawn near,
Over all the worlds, at its appointed time.
To the two worlds in its appointed time.
وَقَدand already أَقبَلَتit has come بِمَوازينِهاwith its scales
وَأَهوالِهاand its terrors وَبِرَوعاتِهاand with its horrors
And it has come bearing its scales,
And it has come with its scales,
And its terrors and its horrors.
And its terrors, and its splendors.
وَإِنّاand indeed we لَفيsurely amid بَعضِsome of أَشراطِهاits portents
وَأَيّامِهاand its days وَعَلاماتِهاand its signs
And we are surely amid some of its portents,
And we are in some of its conditions,
And its days and its signs.
And its days, and its signs.
رَكَنّاwe have trusted إِلىin الدارِthe abode دارِthe abode of الغُروdelusion (word begins here)
رِcompletion of 'delusion' إِذwhen سَحَرَتناit bewitched us بِلَذّاتِهاwith its pleasures
We have trusted in the abode, the abode of delu—
We have inclined toward the abode, the abode of delusion,
—sion, when it bewitched us with its pleasures.
When it has captivated us with its pleasures.
فَماso not نَرعَويwe take heed لَأَعاجيبِهاof its wonders
وَلاnor لِتَصَرُّفِof the shifting of حالاتِهاits conditions
So we take no heed of its wonders,
So we do not heed its wonders,
Nor of its shifting fortunes.
Nor the changes of its states.
نُنافِسُwe compete فيهاin it وَأَيّامُناwhile our days
تَرَدَّدُcome and go فيناamong us بِآفاتِهاwith their afflictions
We compete within it, while our days
We vie in it while our days
Come and go among us with their afflictions.
Circle back to us with their harms.
وَماand not يَتَفَكَّرُreflect أَحياؤُهاits living people
فَيَعتَبِرونَand thus they take warning بِأَمواتِهاfrom its dead
And its living do not reflect
Yet the living among them do not contemplate,
So as to take warning from its dead.
And take heed from the dead among them.
