جَمَعتَ مِنَ الدُنيا وَحُزتَ وَمُنّيتا

جَمَعتَ مِنَ الدُنيا وَحُزتَ وَمُنّيتا

وَما لَكَ إِلّا ما وَهَبتَ وَأَمضَيتا

وَما لَكَ إِلّا ما وَهَبتَ وَأَمضَيتا

You amassed worldly goods, possessed them, and were filled with hopes;

You have amassed from this life and hoarded greedily,

yet nothing is yours but what you gave away and sent ahead.

Yet you have nothing left except what you gave away and used up.

وَما لَكَ مِمّا يَأكُلُ الناسُ غَيرُ ما

وَما لَكَ مِمّا يَأكُلُ الناسُ غَيرُ ما

أَكَلتَ مِنَ المالِ الحَلالِ فَأَفنَيتا

أَكَلتَ مِنَ المالِ الحَلالِ فَأَفنَيتا

And of what people eat, nothing is yours except what

Of all people eat, nothing's left for you

you ate from lawful wealth and thereby used up.

Except what you consumed of lawful property and finished off.

وَما لَكَ إِلّا كُلُّ شَيءٍ جَعَلتَهُ

وَما لَكَ إِلّا كُلُّ شَيءٍ جَعَلتَهُ

أَمامَكَ لا شَيءٌ لِغَيرِكَ بَقَّيتا

أَمامَكَ لا شَيءٌ لِغَيرِكَ بَقَّيتا

And nothing is yours but all that you placed

For you is everything you put before you,

ahead of you—not anything you left for another.

Nothing remains for others once you are gone.

وَما لَكَ مِمّا يَلبَسُ الناسُ غَيرَ ما

وَما لَكَ مِمّا يَلبَسُ الناسُ غَيرَ ما

كَسَوتَ وَإِلّا ما لَبِستَ فَأَبلَيتا

كَسَوتَ وَإِلّا ما لَبِستَ فَأَبلَيتا

And of what people wear, nothing is yours except what

Of all people wear, nothing's yours

you gave as clothing, or what you wore and wore out.

Except what you clothed yourself in, and what you wore out.

وَما أَنتَ إِلّا في مَتاعٍ وَبُلغَةٍ

وَما أَنتَ إِلّا في مَتاعٍ وَبُلغَةٍ

كَأَنَّكَ قَد فارَقتَها وَتَخَلَّيتا

كَأَنَّكَ قَد فارَقتَها وَتَخَلَّيتا

And you are only amid enjoyment and sustenance,

You're left with belongings and merchandise

as though you had already left it behind and withdrawn.

As if you've parted with them and cast them aside.

فَلا تَغبِطَنَّ الحَيَّ في طولِ عُمرِهِ

فَلا تَغبِطَنَّ الحَيَّ في طولِ عُمرِهِ

بِشَيءٍ تَرى إِلّا بِما تَغبِطُ المَيتا

بِشَيءٍ تَرى إِلّا بِما تَغبِطُ المَيتا

So never envy the living in his long life

So envy no living man for his long life

for anything you see, save what you envy the dead for.

With something, unless you envy the dead.

أَلا أَيُّهَذا المُستَهينُ بِنَفسِهِ

أَلا أَيُّهَذا المُستَهينُ بِنَفسِهِ

أَراكَ وَقَد ضَيَّعتَها وَتَناسَيتا

أَراكَ وَقَد ضَيَّعتَها وَتَناسَيتا

Take heed, you who hold your own soul in contempt:

O you who take life easy and light!

I see you have squandered it and feigned forgetfulness.

I see you have squandered it and forgotten.

إِذا ما غُبِنتَ الفَضلَ في الدينِ لَم تُبَل

إِذا ما غُبِنتَ الفَضلَ في الدينِ لَم تُبَل

وَإِن كانَ في الدُنيا قَطَبتَ وَبالَيتا

وَإِن كانَ في الدُنيا قَطَبتَ وَبالَيتا

When you were cheated of merit in religion, you did not care;

If you miss excellence in religion you are not chided,

but if it was in worldly matters, you frowned and cared.

Yet if you succeeded in life you rose and built up.

وَإِن كانَ شَيءٌ تَشتَهِهِ رَأَيتَهُ

وَإِن كانَ شَيءٌ تَشتَهِهِ رَأَيتَهُ

وَإِن كانَ ما لا تَشتَهِهِ تَعامَيتا

وَإِن كانَ ما لا تَشتَهِهِ تَعامَيتا

And if there was something you desired, you saw it,

What you desire you will attain,

but if it was what you did not desire, you feigned blindness.

What you don't, you turn a blind eye to.

لَهِجتَ بِأَنواعِ الأَباطيلِ غِرَّةً

لَهِجتَ بِأَنواعِ الأَباطيلِ غِرَّةً

وَأَدنَيتَ أَقواماً عَلَيها وَأَقصَيتا

وَأَدنَيتَ أَقواماً عَلَيها وَأَقصَيتا

You became engrossed in all sorts of falsehood, heedlessly,

You have babbled all kinds of nonsense boastfully

and for their sake drew people near and drove others away.

And have drawn some people to it, and distanced others.

وَجَمَّعتَ ما لا يَنبَغي لَكَ جَمعُهُ

وَجَمَّعتَ ما لا يَنبَغي لَكَ جَمعُهُ

وَقَصَّرتَ عَمّا يَنبَغي وَتَوانَيتا

وَقَصَّرتَ عَمّا يَنبَغي وَتَوانَيتا

And you amassed what you ought not to amass,

You gathered what you should not gather,

and fell short of what you ought to do and were remiss.

And lagged in what you should have hastened to do.

وَصَغَّرتَ في الدُنيا مَساكِنَ أَهلِها

وَصَغَّرتَ في الدُنيا مَساكِنَ أَهلِها

فَباهَيتَ فيها بِالبِناءِ وَعالَيتا

فَباهَيتَ فيها بِالبِناءِ وَعالَيتا

And in this world you belittled its people's dwellings,

You belittled the dwellings of the people of this world,

so you boasted there of building and built ever higher.

Then vied in it with lofty buildings.

وَأَلقَيتَ جِلبابَ الحَيا عَنكَ ضِلَّةً

وَأَلقَيتَ جِلبابَ الحَيا عَنكَ ضِلَّةً

فَأَصبَحتَ مُختالاً فَخوراً وَأَمسَيتا

فَأَصبَحتَ مُختالاً فَخوراً وَأَمسَيتا

And you cast the cloak of modesty off yourself, misguided,

You threw off the cloak of modesty,

so morning and evening found you arrogant and boastful.

And strutted proud morning and night.

وَجاهَرتَ حَتّى لَم تَرِع عَن مُحَرَّمٍ

وَجاهَرتَ حَتّى لَم تَرِع عَن مُحَرَّمٍ

وَلَم تَقتَصِد فيما أَخَذتَ وَأَعطَيتا

وَلَم تَقتَصِد فيما أَخَذتَ وَأَعطَيتا

And you acted openly until you shunned no forbidden thing,

You went public until you feared no taboo,

and showed no moderation in what you took and gave.

Nor moderated what you took and gave.

وَنافَستَ في الأَموالِ مِن غَيرِ حِلِّها

وَنافَستَ في الأَموالِ مِن غَيرِ حِلِّها

وَأَسرَفتَ في إِنفاقِها وَتَعَدَّيتا

وَأَسرَفتَ في إِنفاقِها وَتَعَدَّيتا

And you competed for wealth gained unlawfully,

You competed for riches unlawfully,

and were extravagant in spending it and overstepped the bounds.

And were excessive in spending them.

وَأَجلَيتَ عَنكَ الغُمضَ في كُلِّ حيلَةٍ

وَأَجلَيتَ عَنكَ الغُمضَ في كُلِّ حيلَةٍ

تَلَطَّفتَ في الدُنيا بِها وَتَأَنَّيتا

تَلَطَّفتَ في الدُنيا بِها وَتَأَنَّيتا

And you banished sleep from yourself over every stratagem

You cast aside all pretense in your tricks -

with which you dealt deftly in this world and took your time.

You were gentle and careful in seeking gains.

تَمَنّى المُنى حَتّى إِذاما بَلَغتَها

تَمَنّى المُنى حَتّى إِذاما بَلَغتَها

سَمَوتَ إِلى ما فَوقَها فَتَمَنَّيتا

سَمَوتَ إِلى ما فَوقَها فَتَمَنَّيتا

You cherished wishes until, once you attained them,

You harbored desires until when you attained them,

you aspired to what lay above them and wished again.

You aspired to what was beyond, ever desiring.

أَيا صاحِبَ الأَبياتِ قَد نُجِّدَت لَهُ

أَيا صاحِبَ الأَبياتِ قَد نُجِّدَت لَهُ

سَتُبدَلُ مِنها عاجِلاً غَيرَها بَيتا

سَتُبدَلُ مِنها عاجِلاً غَيرَها بَيتا

O owner of houses already furnished for you,

O author of these verses - a new composition

you will soon be given another house in their place.

Will soon replace them, changing verse by verse.

لَكَ الحَمدُ يا ذا المَنِّ شُكراً خَلَقتَنا

لَكَ الحَمدُ يا ذا المَنِّ شُكراً خَلَقتَنا

فَسَوَّيتَنا فيمَن خَلَقتَ وَسَوَّيتا

فَسَوَّيتَنا فيمَن خَلَقتَ وَسَوَّيتا

Praise and thanks are Yours, O Giver of bounty: You created us,

Praise be to You, O Lord of bounty - You created us

so You fashioned us among those You created and fashioned.

And proportioned us among those You have proportioned.

وَكَم مِن بَلايا نازِلاتٍ بِغَيرِنا

وَكَم مِن بَلايا نازِلاتٍ بِغَيرِنا

فَسَلَّمتَنا يا رَبِّ مِنها وَعافَيتا

فَسَلَّمتَنا يا رَبِّ مِنها وَعافَيتا

And how many calamities have descended upon others,

How many afflictions have befallen others,

while You kept us safe from them, O my Lord, and granted us well-being.

Yet You spared us from them and gave us well-being.

أَيا رَبِّ مِنّا الضَعفُ إِن لَم تُقَوِّنا

أَيا رَبِّ مِنّا الضَعفُ إِن لَم تُقَوِّنا

عَلى شُكرِ ما أَبلَيتَ مِنكَ وَأَولَيتا

عَلى شُكرِ ما أَبلَيتَ مِنكَ وَأَولَيتا

O my Lord, weakness is ours if You do not strengthen us

O Lord, we are weak - unless You strengthen us

to give thanks for what You have bestowed from Yourself and granted.

To thank You for Your blessing and favor towards us.

أَيا رَبِّ نَحنُ الفائِزونَ غَداً لَئِن

أَيا رَبِّ نَحنُ الفائِزونَ غَداً لَئِن

تَوَلَّيتَنا يا رَبِّ فيمَن تَوَلَّيتا

تَوَلَّيتَنا يا رَبِّ فيمَن تَوَلَّيتا

O my Lord, we shall triumph tomorrow, if indeed

O Lord, we are the winners tomorrow if

You take us into Your care, O my Lord, among those You have cared for.

You support us, O Lord, among those You have supported.

أَيا مَن هُوَ المَعروفُ مِن غَيرِ رُؤيَةٍ

أَيا مَن هُوَ المَعروفُ مِن غَيرِ رُؤيَةٍ

تَبارَكتَ يا مَن لا يُرى وَتَعالَيتا

تَبارَكتَ يا مَن لا يُرى وَتَعالَيتا

O You who are known without being seen,

O You Who are known without being seen,

blessed and exalted are You, O unseen One.

Blessed are You, O Unseen One, Most Exalted.
