ماwhat بالُis the matter with نَفسِكَyour soul بِالآمالِby hopes مُنخَدِعَهdeceived
ما بالُ نَفسِكَ بِالآمالِ مُنخَدِعَه
وَماand what لَهاis with it لاnot تُرىis seen بِالوَعظِfrom admonition مُنتَفِعَهbenefiting
وَما لَها لا تُرى بِالوَعظِ مُنتَفِعَه
Why is your soul deceived by hopes?
What fools these hopes that fill your mind,
And why is it not seen benefiting from admonition?
And heed no lesson that they find!
أَماhave … not? سَمِعتَyou heard بِمَنof one who أَضحىcame to be لَهُfor him سَبَبٌa means
أَما سَمِعتَ بِمَن أَضحى لَهُ سَبَبٌ
إِلىto النَجاةِsalvation بِحَرفٍthrough a word واحِدٍsingle سَمِعَهhe heard it
إِلى النَجاةِ بِحَرفٍ واحِدٍ سَمِعَه
Have you not heard of one who gained a means
Have you not heard of one who gained
To salvation through a single word he heard?
Salvation through a word he trained his ear to hear?
