ماwhat لَناwith us لانَتَفَكَّرwe do not reflect
ما لَنا لانَتَفَكَّر
أَينَwhere كِسرىKisra أَينَwhere قَيصَرCaesar
أَينَ كِسرى أَينَ قَيصَر
Why do we not reflect?
Why do we not contemplate,
Where is Kisra? Where is Caesar?
Where is Chosroes, where is Caesar,
أَينَwhere مَنhe who قَدalready جَمَعَgathered الماthe wealth (first part)
أَينَ مَن قَد جَمَعَ الما
لَcompletion of 'wealth' مَعَtogether with المالِthe wealth فَأَكثَرand amassed more
لَ مَعَ المالِ فَأَكثَر
Where is he who gathered wealth
Where are those who amassed gold,
upon wealth, and amassed still more?
Along with wealth they accumulated more,
أَينَwhere مَنhe who كانَused to يُساميvie with others
أَينَ مَن كانَ يُسامي
بِغِنىthrough wealth الدُنياthe world وَيَفخَرand boast
بِغِنى الدُنيا وَيَفخَر
Where is he who used to vie with others
Where are those who were competing,
through worldly wealth, and boast?
With the riches of this world and took pride,
لَيتَif only شِعريmy knowing أَيُّwhat شَيءٍthing
لَيتَ شِعري أَيُّ شَيءٍ
بَعدَafter شَيءٍa thing أَتَنَظَّرI await
بَعدَ شَيءٍ أَتَنَظَّر
If only I knew what thing
I wonder which thing,
I await after another.
After a thing I await,
قَدindeed رَأَيتُI have seen الدَهرَtime يُفنيdestroy
قَد رَأَيتُ الدَهرَ يُفني
مَعشَراًa community مِنfrom بَعدِafter مَعشَرa community
مَعشَراً مِن بَعدِ مَعشَر
I have seen time destroy
I have seen time making perish,
one community after another.
One group of people after another,
لَيسَnot يَبقىremains ذوpossessor of يَسارٍwealth
لَيسَ يَبقى ذو يَسارٍ
لاno وَلاnor مَنhe who كانَwas مُعسِرpoor
لا وَلا مَن كانَ مُعسِر
No man of wealth endures,
There remains neither a wealthy one,
no, nor anyone who was poor.
Nor one who was destitute.
