مَنwhoever كانَwas يَزعُمُhe claims أَنthat سَيَكتُمُhe will conceal حُبَّهُhis love
أَوor يَستَطيعُhe can السَترُconcealment فَهوَthen he is كَذوبُan inveterate liar
Whoever claims that he will conceal his love
Whoever claims that he can conceal his love
Or can keep it hidden is an inveterate liar.
Or is able to hide it, he is a liar
الحُبُّlove أَغلَبُmore overpowering لِلرِجالِover men بِقَهرِهِthrough its subduing force
مِنthan أَنthat يُرىbe seen لِلسِرِّfor secrecy فيهِin it نَصيبُa share
Love overwhelms men with too great a force
Love overpowers men by its might
For secrecy to have any share in it.
More than a secret in it has a share
وَإِذاand when بَداbecame apparent سِرُّthe secret اللَبيبِof the wise man فَإِنَّهُthen indeed it
لَمdid not يَبدُappear إِلّاexcept وَالفَتىwhile the young man مَغلوبُis overcome
And when a wise man's secret comes to light, surely it
And when the heart of the wise reveals itself
Has appeared only when the young man is overcome.
It only reveals when the man is defeated
إِنّيindeed I لَأَحسُدُsurely envy ذاone possessed of هَوىًpassion مُستَحفِظاًkeeping it guarded
لَمdid not تَتَّهِمهُsuspect him أَعيُنٌeyes وَقُلوبُand hearts
Indeed, I envy a lover who keeps his passion guarded,
Truly I envy one whose love is guarded
Whom neither eyes nor hearts have suspected.
No eyes or hearts suspect him
