Who has perceived the people of the graves for me, and who has seen them?

Who has perceived them for me among the layers of earth?

Who has perceived for me the one whose company I cherished, who cherished

My company? For I find the remoteness of our meeting strange.

Who has perceived him for me as he struggles with a choking pang,

Too occupied with easing it to heed whoever called?

Who has perceived him for me upon his bier,

As a band carries him to the house of decay?

O living one who is destined to die,

You have exhausted your life with consolations and wishes.

As for gray hair, its mantle has already clothed you,

And stripped from your hands the garments of youth.

The generation you knew has already gone

On its way; you shall surely join those who have gone.

    وَلَقَلَّ ما يَصِفو سُرورُكَ إِن صَفا

    How little time you have left—so remain expectant;

And how seldom your joy is unclouded, if ever it is.

This is the road, so make provision for it,

As though your day, so near, had already come.

    ما أَبعَدَ الطِبعَ الحَريصَ مِنَ الغِنى

    Wealth is indeed contentment itself;

How far the covetous nature is from wealth!

Do not let 'if' and 'if only' distract you from what

You now find yourself in, nor 'perhaps' nor 'maybe'.

    فَلَرُبَّ خَيرٍ في مُخالَفَةِ الهَوى

    Resist your desire when it calls you toward something dubious;

For much good lies in resisting desire.

The signpost of the clear path is plain to whoever seeks it,

Yet I see hearts blind to that path.

I have marveled at one who perishes, though his deliverance

Is at hand; and I have marveled at whoever is saved.

And I marvel that he forgets death, though there is no

End short of death, however long it is delayed.

The hours of your night and day alike

Are messengers to you, hastening their steps.

And if you are saved, it is only the mercy of the

Merciful King; and if you perish, it is recompense.

O dweller in this world, do you feel safe from its passing?

You surely see the days' millstone turning.

And how many a fortified man has Time destroyed,

Atop a towering, rugged mountain with inaccessible peaks!

Where are those who built fortresses and mustered

Troops within them to make themselves mighty—where are they?

Where are the defenders, steadfast in their zeal,

On the day of battle, against the heat of spears brought to bear?

And those with pulpits, armies, and country

    Estates, strongholds, cities, and villages?

And those with processions, mounts, and

Battalions, noble steeds, and lofty ranks?

The King of kings has destroyed them, and now

Not one of them can be perceived or seen.

And He is the Hidden, the Manifest, the King who

Has always been King; He established Himself upon the Throne.

    وَهُوَ الَّذي في المُلكِ لَيسَ لَهُ سِوى

    And He ordains and governs His creation;

And He is the One without a peer in dominion.

And He is the One who decrees as befits Him

Concerning us; none may pass judgment upon Him when He decrees.

And He is the One who sent the prophet Muhammad—

May God bless the chosen Prophet.

And He is the One who saved us and rescued us through him,

After corruption, from misguidance to right guidance.

How long will you remain heedless, my friend?

How long, how long—and until when?

And night passes, and day; within them

Are passing lessons and food for thought for people of understanding.

How long will you seek to build up a dwelling

Where you are safe neither from terrors nor from harm?

O company of the dead, O guests of

Earth's soil, how have you found the taste of dust?

    أَهلَ القُبورِ تَغَيَّرَت تِلكَ الحُلى

    People of the graves, the dust has erased your faces;

People of the graves, those adornments have changed.

    إِنَّ الدِيارَ بِكُم لَشاحِطَةُ النَوى

    People of the graves, the remoteness of your dwellings is enough;

Indeed, those dwellings, with you in them, are far removed.

    مَن ماتَ أَصبَحَ حَبلُهُ رَثَّ القِوى

    People of the graves, no bonds join you together;

Whoever dies finds the strands of his cord worn out.

For many a brother of mine, I have stood beside his grave,

And called to him: 'God bless you—what a fine young man!'

O my dear brother, you were not shielded from death when it came

By what the physician fed you or gave you to drink.

O my dear brother, amulets did not spare you what

I had feared for you, nor did incantations.

O my dear brother, how have you found the rough touch of the

Abode, and how have you found your cramped resting place?

    فَأَجَلُّ مِنهُ فِراقُ دائِرَةِ الرَدى

    I used to dread parting from you while you were safe and well;

But greater still is the parting brought by death's calamity.

Today my grieving is justified, since there has come to pass

God's decree upon me concerning you, as it has come to pass.

My eye weeps for you, then my heart, in grief,

And with its tearing anguish over you whenever it weeps.

And whenever I remember you, my dear brother, it is torn apart—

My liver; my ribs and innards are thrown into turmoil.
